New chapter tomorrow... No more ports, no more dense, dumb, inner city type security guards. But also, no more OTR, or threat of. Just work hard while on duty, get off, come home and relax, and earn enough to pay bills, save, and get a head a bit. And with current job, I'll be learning a few extra skills, fork lift and other such tractors...cool.  Many trucking companies fail to retain the best and brightest cause they don't 'train to retain'... Management fails to realize this, in that most humans like to improve, want to improve, want to learn more as they go along, I mean the 'white collar' or corporate world realizes this, but for some reason most don't think it applies to the blue collar world or workers...wrong! We all enjoy learning and growing and advancing, and if fail to realize this, it will show in your bottom line and retention rate. Teach, and allow those who want to advance the chance to do so. Anyways, tomorrow begins new chapter in me work life. New challengers, skills to be learned, working around new people, I can't wait, first time I've been excited about a job in years. to be continued.. |

First day
1. Alarm set for 5 am...normally, on job just left, didn't even think of waking up until 6:30 AM.
New job start time is 6:30 AM...
2. Showed up, all was good, still dark.
3. Eventually paired with another 'new' driver...Mainly to teach me how to handle the forklift, which I operated today for first time ever in life, not many things I haven't done, but operating a forklift (within realm of blue collar work) is one of those never done until today.
I did OK, loaded a few bails...did OK, then trainer took over to speed things up in that they were also tasked with aiding two more new drivers who showed up at this particular account.
4. Long hot day, him training the others made the day even longer and more hot...
5. Headed back, very long drive, the guy driving with scared me on one than more occasion, just not sure why so many drivers feel they must drive so aggressively.
We did make it back safe though, upon hearing that truck behind us, with other two new drivers, has mishap on interstate, their truck caught on fire...don't ask me how.
6. Home now, zoning out, took in a lot today, a bit overwhelmed, and I know tomorrow will be filled with just as much 'new' stuff, fast stuff, but have to catch on soon if want to be considered for permanent hire one day.
And with that I'm out, time to relax.

When you start off on a new job you basically come home feeling like nothing, you feel as if an imbasol who was dragged around all day with new information being poured on you, like an overload, yet have to pretend to understand the basics just to keep stuff rolling along.
You're not dumb though, and can easily measure your own incompetence against those who have been there a while.
But hopefully company understands that, is why most companies allow for 'training period'.

With this one little skill, so many more doors in the industry can open up to you, from warehouse to other...

So far new job chapter not as bright as thought it would be, here's why Trucking is trucking is trucking, and if a driver, or labor in that equations, in the end nothing more than mindless blind labor. Here's how it usually goes... 1. Recruiter promises you the world 2. Get hired 3. In orientation you learn recruiters world is different from reality of company. 4. short honeymoon period 5. Once job begins, schedule is brutal, have to alter logs in order to make shift work, and then the exploitation begins, 'work Saturday or else'. Same o same o. Always told must do it for 'corporate'...well you know what, screw corporate, I've never met corporate, and so called corporate never bothers coming down to mill, factory, the road, to see how 'we' out here are surviving. I'm one person, with own health, own energy levels, and can only do so much in 24 hour cycle. And while out busting, so called 'corporate' has long since clocked out, at home eating, with family or whining and dining out in the city having fun, while we labor types, drivers, ect, still slaving away, taking all the ground risks, trying to avoid D.O.T., trying to avoid over weight tickets, fines, blow outs, accidents and more. When finally get home we stumble in to tired to do anything but crash onto couch or bed. Then asked to be back to work 5 hours later while so called 'corporate' has had plenty of rest and sleep. I'm not a slave to no one anymore, old enough to realize kissing this invisible 'corporate' butt doesn't always pay off, instead it puts you at risk of losing your health to satisfy this invisible 'corporate class'. Their bonuses are in the 1000's, our bonuses are in the cents, or dollars. We do all the physical labor, risk life and limb, all they risk is reputations, based on how we perform. We, the labor, bend rules, fudge logs, to meet their 'quotas'... Anyways...training was fun, at least now can operate forklift and moffet, but not sure if I'll stick around or not...days way to long, risks way to high, for pay. Or maybe will just stick around long enough to buy own RV or travel trailer, pay for it in cash...  This way won't be a slave to anything anymore in that home would be paid for, RV lots way cheaper than rent, and can finally relax a bit, while still healthy enough to enjoy life, without working self to death and retiring when old and frail, if even make it that long. As a single person, I like the RV route...where I can relax now, in the now, while healthy enough to still get something out of life.

Forklift or no forklift, trucking is still trucking, and trucking, driving for more than 2 hours a day, bores the hell out of me.
Traffic stresses me out, everyone drives at different speeds, other truckers cut over to seen, some use blinkers, others do not.
DOT always looking to 'nail' you, I just don't like it anymore.
But stay with it do to 'pay' I suppose.
Most drivers, today, look out of shape and sickly and or old, spent.
Tough trade, especially if OTR, but even local type of driving will wear on you if not careful.
Just not 'feeling it' anymore, haven't in years, and no one treats drivers with respect anymore, drivers are considered low IQ types, even by other drivers.
But again, do to pay, I stay in it thus far.
Would rather learn new trade, or even work in older one, but such jobs these days just don't pay, haven't kept up with cost of living.
If single, just can't get buy on less than 7-8 hundred take home pay per week.
Sadly, I can earn more as CDL driver than many starting college graduates with 4 year degree.
But sadly trucking just doesn't excite me anymore, hasn't in a very long time, and doubt it ever will ever again.
Don't even like sound of engine or gears shifting after a while, it's just all stress to me, noise.
But at least grateful can still earn a living doing so and be home daily still, even though hours very long.

New chapter?...not sure what it is anymore, but like the 'off time.
Every new chapter in life has it's 'off mark moments'...
But one thing I do like about new job, position, is NOT the job or position, but rather the 'off time', job and position allows me to have when off duty...that's what I like.
A driving job where can at least pay basic bills, and also be home daily, and 90% off on weekends, that's what I like.
Cause as you age, you begin to realize 'Time' is more valuable than money, cause you can't spend money when dead.
I cherish my off time, more than I do any few extra dollars could earn by working a Sat here or there.
Small monetary 'change', has never altered any ones life, if it did we'd all be billionaires by now.
So as you age, the balance between 'time' and 'money' begins to favor time.
A whole Saturday off does more for my soul, peace of mind, creative side, artistic side, than whatever extra money I earn, or would have, by working that day.
As blue collar type, I realize by now if going to 'prosper', it's not going to be from sacrificing a Weekend for some corporate or office types who could give a dam if lost leg in accident, rather if prosper, the amount of money needed would be 30 to 400 times the amount could ever bring in from one extra day of work.
Extra day work people are dense to me.
I'm hidden cause I make way to much sense...
Just glad to be off now, what few minutes I have to enjoy this evening, I'll take it.
